In October 2007 Mitchell won his first State Title – Tasmanian Sprint Kart Champion State Title, this is the pinnacle achievement for a Midget racer as they are not eligible to compete at an Australian National Title until they are in the Junior Classes and aged 13 years of age. Mitchell also had outstanding podium finishes for other major race meetings throughout this year.
In January 2008 Mitchell signed a Team Contract with Tony Kart Florida to compete in the Indy Racing League Stars of Karting Series across the United States of America. Whilst this was a challenging time for the technical crew, Mitchell gained valuable experience as part of this successful Team. In Australia, Mitchell moved to the Rookie category in June, this is for competitors aged between 11–13 years old inclusive. The category also carries a minimum weight restriction of 105kg, kart and driver. Mitchell competed in his first Rookie race event - winning his first race as a Rookie and placing 2nd overall for the meeting.
The first six months of 2009 involved a lot of travel to and from the UK for family reasons. Consequently Mitchell competed in only a few race meets in 2009. It was during the latter part of the year that Mitchell progressed to the Junior class of National Light.
2010 began with technical difficulties and we made the tough decision to leave Tony Kart and start afresh with Arrow. Clint and Pete Cathcart of the highly successful CC Racing Team welcomed Mitchell into their Team in March this year. This has been the catalyst of a turning point for Mitchell, CC Racing Team are supportive, professional and extremely knowledgeable and Mitchell has settled into the Team very quickly.
Mitchell went into his first Nationals with guns blazing, he had a positive attitude, a fast CC Racing engine and a great Arrow chassis. Unfortunately his placings were affected by other competitors in incidents in both the first and third heats. Despite these major setbacks Mitchell finished a respectable 14th in the Final.
June 2010 brings a new and exciting challenge for Mitchell, he will be testing and preparing to race the Junior Rotax category. His first race in JMax as it is known will be Round 2 of the Golden Power Series on 18-20 June. Mitchell's personal trainer, Phil Young of GP Human Performance is working diligently with him to ensure he has the stamina and physical and mental strength to race this demanding category alongside the Junior National Light category.
